Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat happens to the tile as the dog candle or pet candle burns?
A: The tile is made is ceramic so that the candle can withstand high temperatures. You may notice that the back of the tile will blacken as the wick gets down to that level. The blackening will not harm the tile.
When should I quit burning my candle?
A: As a maker of unique dog gifts and dog breed merchandise, we know a thing or two about candle making. We recommend that you quit burning your candle when there is about one-half-inch of gel remaining at the bottom the candleholder. Doing so prevents the candle from becoming too hot at the bottom. We recommend that you always be sure to burn your candle on a heat-safe surface.
What is the gel and is it safe?
A: Candle gel is a patented combination of mineral oils and gelling agents. When properly maintained, the gel can burn up to five times longer than wax. When manufactured properly, there are no additional safety hazards in a gel candle than in any other candle. Please review the burning instructions below for more information.
I am seeing some smoke from my candle. What do I do next?
A: While your candle should be smoke-free, you may notice a small amount of smoke coming from the wick. Be sure to trim your wick to one-quarter-inch or less in length before lighting. Inspect the candle to be sure there are no foreign objects, such as wick trimmings, dust, or bugs, in the candle. Keep your candle out of drafty areas. Moving air can cause the wick to flicker excessively and cause smoke to appear. The result will be an uneven burning or your candle.
I see metal in the wick. Is this lead?
A: No. All wicks used in our candles do not contain lead. The metal that you see is zinc and it is important in gel candles to keep the wick straight to ensure a good burning candle.
What is the best way to trim the wick?
A: Scissors will work, but they tend to drop the wick trimmings back down into the gel. We have several styles of wick trimmers available for purchase on our accessories page. These trimmers allow you to trim the wick and remove the trimmings in one easy step.
